In 2013, large Chinese shipyards began to adopt Japan and South Korea's advanced lean shipbuilding model, requiring steel mills to deliver boat decks by section. JIT production in NISCO meets the shipbuilding industry's individualized requirements for quick delivery, multiple varieties, multiple specifications, small batches and zero inventory, and kicks off smart manufacturing.
In 2015, NISCO introduced the new customization model of "JIT+C2M," and found the great business opportunity of manufacturing high-strength, wear-resistant accessories for users. NISCO built the JIT+C2M intelligent processing and distribution center according to the requirements of Industry 4.0. It is the world's first intelligent production line specializing in the production of wear-resistant steel parts. Digital technologies such as the industrial Internet, 5G, blockchain, big data, cloud platform, and AI are deeply integrated with steel manufacturing on this intelligent production line.
Digital technology is empowering traditional steel manufacturing, and the results are immediate. "The order cycle time has been reduced from 45-60 days to 15 days, the per capita production efficiency has increased from 10-15 tons to 100 tons per month, and the efficiency has increased by 5 to 10 times." So far, more than 5,000 tons of highly processed wear-resistant steel parts have been produced and supplied to Spain, Italy, the Middle East, and Australia, Fei Kun said.

The transformation and upgrading of NISCO's production lines prove that the development of intelligent manufacturing cannot do without the strong support of digital technologies such as software, AI and big data.
The CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and the Nanjing Municipal People's Government attach great importance to the development of intelligent manufacturing, implement the industrial landmark action plan to high standards, and make great efforts to build five landmark industrial clusters related to intelligent manufacturing: AI, integrated circuit, software and information services.
"This year, we have established the 'chain chief system' and promotion mechanism on the software and information service industrial chains, run a chain replenishment project, and made good shortcomings in basic software, industrial software, and emerging platform software." We will build the first batch of "advanced national software and information service manufacturing clusters," said a chief of the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology.

Integration in the "testing ground" creates intelligent manufacturing landmarks
The in-depth integration of the digital technology and manufacturing is the key to the high-quality development of intelligent manufacturing.
Nanjing announced the first batch of 17 application scenarios on August 30. Among them, three involve intelligent manufacturing, covering forefront fields of technology like AI, 5G, cloud computing, big data and the Industrial Internet.
The 14th Institute of the China Electronics Technology Corporation built a general assembly digital twin intelligent workshop characterized by "digital application, intelligent management, and low energy consumption" to achieve digital integration at the design end, the process end and the production end. Virtual products are placed in scenarios for demand analysis at the research and development stage. This has enabled us to "see what we have in mind" and shortened the lead time by 25%. And production efficiency has increased by more than 50%, said a chief of the 14th Institute.
According to a senior official of the Nanjing Municipal New Industry Promotion Office, Nanjing will roll out more intelligent manufacturing application scenarios to generate new demand and vitality, build "testing grounds" for the collaboration between underlying technologies and applications, and turn new technologies and good ideas into new products, new applications and new possibilities.
The 2020 World Intelligent Manufacturing Conference (WIMC) will showcase the latest intelligent manufacturing technologies and products and provide a benchmark for the in-depth integration of digital technology and the manufacturing industry.
